PS 340 & New York Foundling

Client: NY Foundling & NYC School Construction Authority

Size: 108,000

Completion Date: 2014

Construction Cost: $7.1 Million

The New York Foundling (NYF), constructed in 1988 and located at 590 Avenue of the Americas, consolidated some of its operations on the upper floors of the 14-story building. The School Construction Authority (SCA) occupies the remaining portion of the building, the cellar through 6th floor of approximately 95,000 SF. New York Foundling engaged JFK&M for MEP services for the redesign of the NYF Lobby ground floor at 590 Avenue of the Americas. JFK&M coordinated with the SCA during design and construction and coordinated systems as required. The 2,200 GSF lobby ground floor redesign consisted of a program redesign by the Architect and a modification of the existing MEP/FP systems.

Fire Alarm System Replacement:
JFK&M provided engineering design services for the fire alarm systems upgrade at 590 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY. NYF occupies the upper floors of this building totaling approximately 50,000 SF and the SCA occupies the remaining portion of the building of approximately 95,000 SF (cellar through 6th floor) as part of the condominium. NYF was requesting to install a complete new fire alarm system, replacing their inoperable system for the NYF floors and connecting it to the SCA core base building FA system.

The Fire Department of New York (“FDNY”) required one application that covered all core devices for the entire building. The FDNY requested NYF to assume the core elements, gain FDNY approval, complete installation and pass FDNY inspections. The FDNY would then issue a partial approval of the core, which will allow the SCA to tie their system into an approved core system. Upon the NYF phasing completion, the partial LOA will become the full and final letter of approval for the entire base building core system.
The 14th floor Lobby FAP and the 6th Avenue FICC FA panel were given separate central alarm addresses and each panel has the capability to control and announce all Fire alarm system commands. The SCA provided system was modified to integrate two way voice communications and switch to the core elements on the NYF 14th floor panel. The FDNY also required a microphone in the SCA space for FDNY use only.
